An Italian court has found Stephan Schmidheiny, a Swiss industrialist, and his business partner Jean-Louis De Cartier, responsible for the deaths of numerous workers.
Both of them were convicted on Monday over unintentional manslaughter.
Cartier and Schmidheiny were major shareholders in a company called “Eternit Genova”. Eternit Genova owned four Italian asbestos plants.
Cartier and Schmidheiny were sentenced to 16years of imprisonment. They have to pay punitive damages of millions of euros as well.
According to Schmidheiny’s spokesman, the verdict was totally incomprehensible. He said Schmidheiny would appeal the ruling.
Cartier and Schmidheiny were not present in the court.
