Former Newcastle CEO Freddie Fletcher is being treated in a hospital after developing mesothelioma, the fatal cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Fletcher is 71 years old.
Doctors have confirmed that Fletcher is suffering from mesothelioma. He underwent a surgery last week, according to his daughter Judith Fourie.
“He is in a battle. There will be further tests,” Fourie said.
Fourie said she was not able to say much from their family’s point of view. “Our priority is to help him handle the side effects of his infection,” Fourie said.
Fletcher’s colleague Sir John Hall said it’s a hard time for Fletcher.
“But he has everyone’s support. We are definitely shocked by the news, but as all of us know, Fletcher is a great fighter,” Hall said.
